“The Hunger Games” Takes to the Stage: A Dystopian Epic Transforms London’s Theatre Scene

“The Hunger Games,” the immensely popular young adult dystopian trilogy by Suzanne Collins, which was also adapted into a successful film franchise, is set to make its live stage debut in a London theatre next year. Irish playwright, screenwriter, and director Conor McPherson has adapted the trilogy’s first book and its corresponding film for the theatre. Matthew Dunster, a notable playwright, director, and former associate director at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, will direct the play.

The groundbreaking film franchise, which grossed over $2 billion at the global box office, introduced audiences to the compelling story of Katniss Everdeen, portrayed by Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence. Katniss is a heroine who must navigate a dystopian world where the oppressed residents of Panem are forced to compete in a brutal televised contest to the death, all while the wealthy elite watch on. The story resonates with themes of resilience, self-reliance, and moral inquiry, making it a perfect fit for the stage.

Conor McPherson expressed his enthusiasm and humility at being allowed to adapt “The Hunger Games” for the stage. “To receive Suzanne Collins’ blessing to adapt ‘The Hunger Games’ for the stage is humbling and inspiring. She has created a classic story which continues to resonate now more than ever,” McPherson said. “In a world where the truth seems increasingly up for grabs, ‘The Hunger Games’ beautifully expresses values of resilience, self-reliance and independent moral inquiry for younger people especially. This is turbocharged storytelling of the highest order, and I’m hugely excited to bring it to a new generation of theatregoers and Suzanne Collins’ longstanding and devoted fans.”

Suzanne Collins also shared her excitement about collaborating with McPherson and Dunster, stating that she is “very excited” to see their “dynamic and innovative interpretation” of her story on the London stage.

The anticipation for this stage adaptation of “The Hunger Games” is building, and fans of the books and films alike eagerly await the chance to see Katniss Everdeen’s story come to life in a new and innovative way. With such a talented team at the helm, this play will surely be a hit and bring a fresh perspective to a classic dystopian tale.
