The Struggle of Greta Gerwig Behind the ‘I’m Just Ken’ Dance Sequence in ‘Barbie’

During an interesting Screen Talk at the BFI London Film Festival, director Greta Gerwig talked about how she came up with the famous “I’m Just Ken” dance scene with Ryan Gosling in the upcoming movie Barbie.

In an interview with the show’s creator, Jesse Armstrong, Gerwig talked about how the scene came to be and cleared up some of the initial questions about its need.

Gerwig said that the script only said, “And then it becomes a dream ballet, and they work it out through dance.”

But the director was questioned about the scene’s importance during a very important meeting.

Gerwig talked about the conversation again: “There was a big meeting that was like, ‘Do you need this?’ And I was like, ‘Everything in me needs this.’”

Some people didn’t understand what a dream ballet was, so Gerwig explained her idea in more detail. She spoke strongly about her ideas for the sequence, “They were like, What do you even mean? What is a dream ballet? And I was like, A dream ballet? Where do I begin!”

Gerwig said she had doubts sometimes. She said that even though everything felt right and brought her a lot of happiness, she was afraid that “this could be just terrible.”
