Estimates from Sunday show that “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” easily beat out two new movies this weekend and made an amazing $58.2 million in ticket sales in North American theaters.
The movie by Universal, Nintendo, and Illumination companies is the best movie of the year. It has made a total of $434.3 million in the U.S. and $437 million in other countries.
Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key all lend their voices to the cartoon based on a game.
“Evil Dead Rise,” a bloody horror movie from Warner Bros., came in second with $23.5 million. Analyst David A. Gross called this “an excellent opening” for a movie that cost only $17 million to make.
Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland play sisters who fight against a group of not-so-subtle demons.
Another new movie, “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which was made by MGM, didn’t do as well. It made an estimated $6.3 million and came in third place. Gross said that “weak start” was much worse than most books in the same field.
In the movie, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a US army sergeant who, after returning to the US, returns to Afghanistan to save a friend (played by Iraqi-born Dar Salim) who helped him escape the Taliban.
“John Wick: Chapter 4,” a neo-noir thriller from Lionsgate, came in fourth with $5.8 million and is still doing well in its fifth week. The title character is played by Keanu Reeves.
And in fifth place, with $5.5 million, was “Air,” a sports drama from Amazon Studios about the business deal between Nike and Michael Jordan’s shoe with the same name.
