Colourful, young and smart, The Varsity Collection by Rare’Z by Rare Rabbit from The House of Rare, is a range full of versatile picks. Pulkit Verma, chief business officer at the House of Rare, takes us through the making of the range, the sneaker revolution and why there is a different sneaker for every purpose.
The Varsity Collection looks so smart…
The Varsity Collection is all about making a confident statement. Our goal was to design something that not only looks sharp but also inspires people to express themselves boldly.
Drawing from the dynamic energy of university life, the collection brings a vibrant edge to everyday style. The standout feature — colour blocking — uses striking, contrasting tones to create a look that’s both eye-catching and empowering.
What are sneaker classics?
Sneaker classics are defined by a few key characteristics — refined silhouettes, clean lines, versatile colourways, and a design that balances form and function. They’re not trend-driven, instead, they offer durability, comfort, and adaptability, whether you’re dressing up or down.
Materials like premium leather or canvas and minimal branding often add to their appeal.
Interestingly, only a couple of brands are able to truly master the formula for a classic — it takes a deep understanding of both heritage and innovation.
What have been your inspirations over the years?
Over the years, I have drawn inspiration from global giants like Adidas and Nike — not just for their products, but for the culture they’ve built around footwear. I’ve also always been influenced by vintage and retro design themes. But more than anything, what drives me is a belief that India deserves better — our people shouldn’t have to rely on sports shoes as default everyday wear. As the urban workforce grows, so does the need for footwear that delivers comfort without any compromises on style. That’s the gap we’re committed to filling.
Did you see sneakers become the revolution they have?
Absolutely! Sneakers have always been a statement piece in everyone’s wardrobe, something that brings the look together. Over the years, they have become more multifaceted, a blend of fashion and functionality. I think what’s really driven this transformation is how different segments — athleisure, casual, even semi-formal — have collided, making sneakers a versatile essential. In India, the street culture has been a huge influence in revolutionising the sneaker industry. The rise of gully culture changed the dressing style, which further boosted the sneaker culture. It redefined how young people dress and express themselves, and sneakers became the heartbeat of that change. What started as a trend quickly became a movement — a culture.
How has the experience been for far with Rare’Z by Rare Rabbit?
When we first launched RareZ sneakers, we envisioned them primarily for the younger generation. But what’s been truly rewarding is seeing people across all age groups embracing our designs. That kind of response has given us the confidence to expand. While sneakers were our starting point, we are now gradually moving into formal leather slippers, evening wear, and boots. This is just the beginning. The journey ahead is about broadening our range while keeping comfort and design at the core.
Are there golden rules when buying sneakers?
Absolutely, there are a few golden rules to keep in mind when buying sneakers, though the most important one is to make sure they reflect you. First and foremost, comfort should always come before anything else. No matter how trendy or eye-catching a pair might be, if they don’t feel right on your feet, you won’t enjoy wearing them. It’s also essential to know why you’re buying them — whether it’s for everyday wear, sports, or making a fashion statement — because that purpose will guide your choice in terms of design, durability, and function.
Quality is another key factor. While it’s easy to get swept up in hype and logos, a truly good pair of sneakers stands out because of its craftsmanship. A great fit is just as crucial, as sizing can vary between brands, so always make sure the sneakers support your foot well and leave room to breathe. And finally, think about how the pair fits into your wardrobe, not just to match, but to add a spark of personality. At the end of the day, sneakers aren’t just footwear — they’re a part of how you show up in the world. So yes, stick to the essentials, but don’t forget to have a little fun along the way.
