Theatre Review: ‘Mamma Mia!’ continues to delight audiences with standout performances and energetic dance numbers

“Mamma Mia!” is back at the Providence Performing Arts Center. This is the fifth time here for the show, and enthusiasm for it has not waned.

In case you’re unaware, “Mamma Mia!” is a jukebox musical built around the music of Abba. The story that weaves the songs together focuses on Sophie, a young about-to-be bride who’s anxious to learn the identity of her father.

She was brought up by Donna, a single mother who built and operates a taverna on a small Greek island. After Sophie reads Donna’s diary from 21 years earlier, she decides that her dad could be one of three of Donna’s beaus. So, Sophie invites all three of the men to the wedding, hoping to find out which is her actual dad.

Not much of a story, really, but it doesn’t matter, because what follows is pure fun that’s at times heartwarming.

This production boasts a simple set. Two large pieces that can rotate and become many things: a courtyard, a bedroom, a beach. The costumes are fun and colorful. The choreography is crisp.

The music is Abba’s and you likely know most of the songs. To demonstrate the enthusiasm for the show, people applauded for the opening overture before the curtain even rose. That’s rare.

“Mamma Mia!” has so many fun moments. The “Dancing Queen” presentation is delightful. The production of Donna & the Dynamos singing “Super Trooper” is great. My favorite number was “Voulez Vous,” which featured a chorus line of boys dancing in swim gear including flippers.

There were a couple of stand-out performances by Tanya (Jalynn Steele) and Rosie (Carly Sakalove) that brought the house down. Steele wowed the audience in “Does Your Mother Know” as a much younger man tried to get into her good graces. Her choreography was complicated and stunning, including one high kick worthy of a Rockette. Sakalove was hilarious in “Take a Chance on Me,” where she chased Bill Austin (Jim Newman) around the chairs set up for the wedding. Both Steele and Sakalove earned thunderous applause at the curtain call.

And kudos to Stephanie Genito, the understudy for Donna, who jumped into the role last night. A wonderful job on her tour debut.

“Mamma Mia!” is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, and it’s a perfect antidote for what ails you.

And a quick note: the show isn’t over when you think it’s over. Right after the last performers bow, the entire cast launches into a dance party, performing three more numbers that will have you up and (possibly) dancing.
