Theatrical Outfit in Downtown Atlanta has announced the shows and events that will make up its 2025/2026 season.
The upcoming season, the 49th for the local theater company, is headlined by the world premiere of “Young John Lewis,” a hip hop musical about the early life of the Georgia congressman and civil rights icon, currently on stage at the Balzer Theatre through July 6.
The Theatrical Outfit-commissioned show will tour across Georgia this fall, with a stop already confirmed at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts and additional locations to be announced in the future, according to the theater.
“’Young John Lewis’ is a story about a young man who finds his political voice, and grows into his moral courage in the face of violence and oppression, and serves as a fresh look at one of the most dynamic and thrilling moments in American history,” said Matt Torney, artistic director with Theatrical Outfit. “It is deeply inspiring, both as a story, and also because of the depth of talent on display from incredible Atlanta artists.”
Along with the statewide tour, Theatrical Outfit will showcase four mainstage productions, opening with a reimagined revival of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” from Oct. 29 to Nov. 23, 2025.
Other shows planned for the season include the world premiere of Steve Yockey’s dark comedy, “Bleeding Hearts” (Jan. 28 – Feb. 22, 2026); a revival of Arthur Miller’s two-act play, “The Price” (April 8 – May 3, 2026) and Lauren Gunderson’s “The Revolutionists” (June 3 – 28, 2026), a “girl-powered comedy about violence and legacy, art and activism.”
“The 25–26 Season is offering an amazing contemporary play by an artist from Atlanta, a World Premiere of a play by an artist from Atlanta, and fresh take on two classics from the American canon with a creative and production team loaded with homegrown artists,” said Addae Moon, Theatrical Outfit’s associate artistic director.
Making its return this summer is LAUNCHPAD 2.0, a festival program that Theatrical Outfit started in its previous season as part of its “commitment to local new work,” according to a release.
Just like with last season’s iteration, LAUNCHPAD 2.0 will feature a total of four premieres, with each respective production putting the spotlight on an original Atlanta voice, said Theatrical Outfit.
“I’m especially excited about the second year of LAUNCHPAD and the engaging template it provides for new work development,” said Moon.
Finally, Theatrical Outfit will host a pair of shows, as part of its “Live at the Balzer” series (which brings the creative works of various organizations to the Downtown Atlanta theater).
This season’s series includes “Ain’t No Mo” by Jordan E. Cooper (a satirical play that imagines what would happen if America offered Black Americans a one-way ticket back to Africa) and “Fat Juliet “from Bridget McCarthy (a solo performance that incorporates the story of Juliet “to map one woman’s not so Juliet-ish search for true love,” according to a release).
The new season will take place at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s, with season packages currently on sale (single tickets will be available “soon,” according toTheatrical Outfit).
