LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Widespread outages from Sunday’s storm system have people worried about their groceries and next meals.
Fallen trees and downed powerlines are blocking the street on Parthenia Avenue. Residents have been without power for over 24 hours now.
”The power went out during the process of me cooking my dinner: meatloaf, mashed, potatoes, and green beans. I couldn’t finish,” Nelson Jenkins said.
Jenkins, who lives three blocks away, drove over to Parthenia Avenue to see the damage from Sunday’s storms. Trees are hanging on a branch. Power lines are left dangling. People have been without power since Sunday and feel like they are running out of options.
”There’s nothing you really can do,” Chasity Tate, who lives in the area said.
Tate told WAVE News she’s experienced this before. Tate and her family lived in Mayfield during the deadly 2021 tornadoes. As they wait for LG&E to restore their power, Tate is adapting to their current situation.
”We can’t cook. We can’t use the microwave, so we will have to go get something,” Tate said. “All day yesterday, we ate sandwiches. That’s all we could eat.”
After four hours without power, the FDA recommends people discard perishable foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers. A full freezer will hold a safe temperature for about 48 hours.
Neighbors have been told it could be three to five days before power is restored to this area.
After the first storm system passed through Sunday, one tree in Jeffersontown snapped several poles and the power lines damaged many cars. Tyler Poge, who lives nearby, was waiting out the storm when it happened.
”This tree just comes crashing down and hits these power lines, taking down this pole and cracking it in half,” Poge explained. “You can see damage to those down there as well. I was sitting right in my car and the power lines just smacked down and laid across. There are five or six cars that have damage done to them.”
Tyler was able to get out of the car safely and avoid the live power lines. Utility crews came out and moved the lines, which allowed Tyler to see the damage left behind. He says he’s just lucky to be alive.
As of Monday, the LG&E outage map estimates power to be restored to many areas Wednesday evening.
