These new Uniqlo x NLB shirts were inspired by Singapore literature

Singapore’s National Library Board (NLB) and fashion retailer Uniqlo have teamed up as part of the National Reading Movement to encourage more people to set aside more time for reading with exclusive t-shirt designs and a library wall at Uniqlo’s 51@AMK outlet.

The designs of the eight exclusive t-shirts were inspired by four Singapore Literature (Sing Lit) books and four reading-inspired slogans.

The four Sing Lit titles which inspired the T-shirt designs include “Sugarbread” by Balli Kaur Jaswal, “A Bad Girl’s Book of Animals” by Wong May and “The Angle Tiger and Other Stories” by Barrie Sherwood and “The Gatekeeper” by Nuraliah Norasid, according to Uniqlo in a statement.

The t-shirts will available at the UNIQLO Orchard Central flagship store . For those who want a personalised design, they can create a one-of-a-kind T-shirt and customise it with texts, photographs, stickers and even other designs from this NLB and UNIQLO partnership at the UTme! customisation booth in the UNIQLO flagship store at Orchard Central, it said.

As part of the partnership, shoppers can also explore various books and immerse themselves in the realms of fiction, sustainability and wellness in a section jointly developed between NLB and UNIQLO.

The library wall at the UNIQLO outlet in 51@AMK features 33 NLB eReads, including six audiobooks. Each panel is adorned with a book cover and summary, as well as two QR codes – one of which leads directly to eReads on the NLB Mobile app, and another which leads to the Apple app store or Google Play store, where one can download the NLB Mobile app.

NLB has long been looking for intersting ways to get more Singaporeans to read. Last year, it launched its first manga library in City Square Mall for Manga fans to enjoy over 5,000 related titles at their convenience.

The six-month pop-up featured a host of wildly popular titles such as Spy x Family, Dragon Ball Z, Assassin’s Creed: Blade Of Shao Jun and the Pokemon Adventures. It also played host to local comics such as Mr Kiasu, Roti Kaya and Guyu and The LKY Story which were available for borrowing.

The local comics were donated by local comic book collectors, according to a Facebook post by NLB at the time.
