‘Casting A Wider Net’ at Fishing Heritage Center

The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, 38 Bethel St., is hosting “Casting A Wider Net,” a new exhibit exploring the stories of Cape Verdean, Vietnamese, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Guatemalan, and Salvadoran members of the working waterfront, in their own words.

“Casting A Wider Net” opens to the public on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a free event at the FHC.

This exhibit will remain on display through May 31, and then will travel to locations throughout the community.

A culmination of the FHC’s community oral history project, “Casting A Wider Net” was developed “to collect and share the stories of communities of color that have been and continue to be an integral part of New Bedford’s commercial fishing industry,” the FHC said in a press release announcing the exhibit.

Guests will have the chance to hear the voices of each person interviewed, view a scrapbook with photos of narrators and their families, and even write them a message in the exhibit guestbook.

Those who attend the free exhibit opening will also have the opportunity to meet program participants. The opening will also feature light refreshments, and music representing the cultures featured in the exhibit.

The photographs, recordings, and transcripts will become part of FHC’s archive and the NOAA Voices web-based archive.

“Casting A Wider Net” is funded in part by a Wicked Cool Places grant from New Bedford Creative, a grant from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, and an Expanding Massachusetts Stories grant from Mass Humanities, which received support from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and is an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Coming soon: ‘Community BLOOMS’ at New Bedford Whaling Museum

“Community BLOOMS,” a new exhibition by transdisciplinary artist Katy Rodden Walker, will be on view at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake Hill from Nov. 22 through May 5.

The exhibition features jellyfish made from recycled plastic — much of it from SouthCoast beach cleanups — to draw attention to ocean pollution and plastic’s impact on the jellyfish ecosystem and beyond.

Since 2022, the NBWM has worked with Rodden Walker on this project, to raise awareness about plastic pollution.

Hundreds of plastic jellyfish, all made by community members, will be on display. These community members are all named contributors to “Community BLOOMS.”

The plastic is sourced in partnership with Providence-based organization Be the Solution to Pollution.

This project is supported in part by the “Art is Everywhere!” grant funded by the City of New Bedford, through American Rescue Plan awards, and its Arts, Culture and Tourism fund, and is facilitated by New Bedford Creative at the NBEDC. This program is supported in part by a grant from the New Bedford Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
