SPRINGFIELD – For years, Dr. Mark A. Keroack kept a small glass swan nearby — a gift from a patient during his days as an infectious disease specialist.

It was the early years of the AIDs epidemic. One of his patients, a sex worker suffering from addiction, had lost her children to the foster care system. But through emerging drug therapies and treatment for her drug dependency —and Keroack’s help — she built her life back.
