There are new options for travelers looking to visit Canada and beyond from a major Midwest airport hub.
Announced this week, Sun Country Airlines, based in Minneapolis, has expanded its schedule with new destinations from their hub at the Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport starting next year.
The airline will begin service to Canada in June 2024, to both Montréal-Trudeau International Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport. Tickets for the new flights to Canada are currently on sale on the airline’s website with starting fares at $99, however the airline said at the time of the announcement that the route is still pending final government approval.
The airline will also begin new seasonal routes to eight new locations around the United States including:
- Albuquerque, New Mexico – Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
- Billings, Montana – Billings Logan International Airport (BIL)
- Boise, Idaho – Boise Airport (BOI)
- Washington, D.C. – Dulles International Airport (IAD)
- Grand Rapids, Michigan – Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR)
- Missoula, Montana – Missoula Montana Airport (MSO)
- Oakland, California – Oakland International Airport (OAK)
- Syracuse, New York – Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR)
The airline confirmed Travel + Leisure that the routes will roll out from April to June with T+L spotting the Minneapolis to Boise route — starting June 19 — with one-way fares starting at $79.
“We have more than doubled our nonstop destinations for customers flying out of MSP in the last five years and we are thrilled to offer these unique new offerings spanning the continent from Quebec to New Mexico,” Sun Valley Airlines’ Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Grant Whitney said in a release announcing the new routes.
The airline says that all of their flights will provide complimentary in-flight entertainment and local Minnesota brands featured on their onboard menu.
The expansion in the Minnesota area is unique as it is one of nine United States hubs for Delta Air Lines.
Sun Country Airlines was founded in 1982 by Jim Olsen, and is known for their ultra-low-cost tickets and also provides a large amount of cargo transportation. The airline provided air travel for 882,877 passengers in 2022, which is a 27 percent increase from passengers flown in 2021, according to a financial report. The airline says they cater mostly to passengers who are on leisure holidays or visiting family and relatives.
