Ten years ago, Morgane Sézalory started her direct-to-consumer brand Sézane.

Featuring timeless fashion pieces inspired by French girl style, the company quickly garnered a legion of fans. After years of waiting — and saving up to shop in Paris and other places that had Sézane stores — the brand finally launched its ecommerce presence in Canada.

This fall, the brand is expanding its fashion footprint with its first children’s line. Dubbed Petit Sézane, the collection features stylish options (including a few brand icons such as the Gaspard Cardigan and Will Jacket) for kids aged a few months to age 12.

We caught up with Sézalory to learn more.

Q: How would you describe Sézane for people who aren’t familiar?

A: Sézane is more than a fashion brand, it’s the story of my life that started when I was 17 and started selling vintage pieces online. I had one goal in mind: offer perfectly cut pieces at fair prices that last forever. But it’s also the story of our social and environmental engagements.

Our efforts have been recognized through a B-Corp certification in 2021. Since 2018, Sézane has also raised more than seven million euros for our philanthropic program DEMAIN, which supports women and equal opportunities for children worldwide.

Q: Who is the target customer?

A: Everyone! I love to know that everyone can find something at Sézane. People from age 16 buying their first cardigan to age 77 loving our purse, for example.

Q: What makes Canada a good fit for the brand?

A: Timeless pieces that can match with everything, colourful and cosy knits and warm coats to fight the coldest winter — and also the best Parisian wardrobe with this je-ne-sais-quoi that makes the difference.

Q: You’re launching a children’s collection. What made this the right time to do so?

A: I’ve been thinking about it for the past 10 years, when Nina, my oldest daughter was born … but I also knew that I needed time to do it right. I needed time to observe and understand what matters for a kid, but also for a parent — me included.

Q: What other exciting launches are coming up for Sézane this fall?

A: A new iconic purse, The Tote, that I’ll carry everywhere this fall. And the most beautiful capsule collection coming from our Studio in September.

Q: Lastly, we have to ask, what’s the secret to French-girl style?

A: There is no secret!
