Prominent New York Gallerist Killed in Rio de Janeiro

Brent Sikkema, of Sikkema Jenkins & Co., was found stabbed to death in his apartment in Jardim Botanico, which he recently described to IdeaFix Magazine as “a true urban ‘oasis’.” Sikkema’s clients include Vik Muniz, Kara Walker and Jeffrey Gibson. The investigation was still unfolding as we went to press, but coverage in the New York Times is here, Artnet here, and ArtNews here. Acclaimed art critic Jerry Saltz posted a reminiscence of Sikkema on Instagram, to which Muniz responded, “I still want to wake up from this horrible nightmare. He was my friend and business partner for 35 years.”

Historic Hub of Brazilian Slave Trade Opens as Unesco World Heritage site

The Art Newspaper has a lengthy report on the opening of the Valongo Wharf in Rio de Janeiro, saying that “Unesco calls the wharf ‘the most important physical trace of the arrival of African slaves on the American continent’.”
