WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Here’s a look at some of the day’s top health stories.
Perinatal mental health
Three new studies suggest a rapid rise in the detection and treatment of mental health issues during pregnancy and the first year of parenthood in patients with private insurance.
A team at the University of Michigan found the rate of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders nearly doubled and perinatal PTSD quadrupled.
Researchers say the rise in diagnosis and care was not equal across different groups of people and states.
Dementia app
An app may help diagnose dementia even before symptoms appear.
Researchers at UC San Francisco found cognitive tests in a mobile app could detect early signs of frontotemporal dementia in people who were genetically predisposed.
Researchers hope the mobile technology will enable greater participation in FTD clinical trials.
Better vision for some
The “eyes” have it. Or at least some of them do.
Research out of Trinity College in Dublin found that visual perception varies widely in humans, with some people seeing more “images per second” than others.
That ability could give them a greater advantage in ball sports or competitive gaming.
