CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Anchored by wins at the top four singles flights, the Charlotte 49ers women’s tennis team defeated Oregon, 4-2, in the final match of the Chapel Hill site of the ITA Kickoff weekend on Saturday evening (Jan. 27).
 
It was another battle throughout, with the match lasting three and a half hours for a grand total of seven and a half hours of tennis over two grueling matches across the weekend.
 
Ares Teixido Garcia paced the Niners (3-3) against her former team, winning her doubles match with Lucia Quiterio and then dominating her singles match, 6-4, 6-0. Her win with Quiterio in doubles was CLT’s only doubles victory of the day as Oregon (1-2) took each of the other two flights.
 
The Ducks retook the lead with a victory in the fifth flight before Lucie Petruzelova leveled the match back up at two points each with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the second flight and Sara Suchankova put the Green and White in front with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory in three sets at the fourth flight.
 
The match came down to a pair of third sets, with 98th-ranked Quiterio and Shona Nakano both splitting their first frames, both of Nakano’s requiring tiebreakers. In the end it was Charlotte’s top player Quiterio who got the job done, winning the third set to clinch the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory. Nakano was ahead in her third set when Quiterio clinched, finishing 6-7 (0), 7-6 (3), 3-1.

Charlotte finishes up its road swing next Saturday (Feb. 3) at Clemson, with first serve scheduled for noon.
