Toyo acquires powertrain dynamometer specialist Rototest

Measurement specialist Toyo has acquired its long-term partner, Rototest, a developer of hub-coupled powertrain dynamometers. Rototest is based in Sweden and will operate as a subsidiary of Toyo, which is in Japan.

“Toyo acquiring Rototest marks a significant milestone for the company. With Toyo, Rototest is poised to enhance its ability to provide innovative automotive test solutions to an even broader array of the world’s leading manufacturers.”

In 2016, Toyo and Rototest entered into a partnership, as part of which Toyo introduced the latter’s hub-coupled dynamometer technology to the Japanese automotive market. According to Toyo, the solution gained widespread acceptance due to its short setup time, user-friendly design and portability. Since then, Toyo has expanded its dyno offerings by integrating them with radar and camera simulators, among other components, resulting in the creation of the Driving & Motion Test System (DMTS). This integrated system enables the evaluation of a range of functions and facilitates simulated indoor testing that accurately mirrors real-world conditions.

In December 2023, Toyo will deliver a DMTS to the Japan Automobile Research Institute to support its HIL testing needs. On the other side of the world, ToyoTech, Toyo’s US subsidiary, has been awarded an order for two Rototest dynamometer systems for a major auto maker’s EV initiatives.

Toyo has also developed a vehicle-in-the-loop solution anchored by Rototest dynamometers.

Christian Engström, CEO of Rototest, commented, “Toyo acquiring Rototest marks a significant milestone for the company. With Toyo, Rototest is poised to enhance its ability to provide innovative automotive test solutions to an even broader array of the world’s leading manufacturers.”

According to analysis firm IndustryARC, the global market for automotive dynos is expected to reach US$1.1615bn by 2027 (projected to be US$928.1m in 2021) due to the changes emerging in electric vehicle technology, autonomous driving, ADAS and connected cars.
