YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University track and field programs opened its 2024 indoor season Saturday, Dec. 1, with the Eagles sending competitors to a pair of meets, including Saginaw Valley State University’s Holiday Open & Multis meet in Saginaw, Mich., and Boston University’s Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener in Boston, Mass. All told the Eagles came away with numerous strong marks, including 13 victories, 41 personal-bests, and five marks that stand among the all-time top 10 in program history.

How It Happened • SVSU
A bulk of the Eagles competed in Saginaw where Eastern claimed 13 event victories, including seven by the women and six by the men. On the women’s side, Antonia Woods (Winchester, Ohio/Groveport Madison) led the way as she took gold in both horizontal jumps, winning the long jump with a best of 5.45m (17-10.75) and the triple jump with a personal-best bound of 10.94m (35-10.75). She was joined in field event wins by Micah Martin (Clinton Township, Mich./L’anse Creuse) in the high jump with a best of 1.70m (5-07.00) and Miranda Cadwell (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) in the shot put with her heave of 14.70m (48-02.75), a mark that ranks third in EMU history.
The final three victories for the women came on the track with a pair of newcomers claiming gold in the EMU track debuts. Sophomore transfer Sophie Emin (Easton, Pa./Easton Area/Rutgers) won the 800m in 2:20.17 while freshman Destiney Rose (Boerne, Texas/Boerne Champion) was the winner of the mile in 5:06.64. Senior Alyson Davis (Summerfield, N.C./Weaver Academy for Performing and Visual Arts) won the 60m dash in 7.58. One final top result came from Isabella Brent (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child), who was sixth in the weight throw at 15.91m (52-02.50), a mark that ranks ninth in EMU history.
On the men’s side, two sprinters captured a pair of wins on the day as Almighty Williamson (Baltimore, Md./Digital Harbor/Barton CC) took gold in the 60m hurdles in 7.90 while newcomer Gabe Singh (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Northview/Oakland) ran the 400m in 48.52 for the win. The duo teamed with Kyle Martin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) and Josh Flake (Redford, Mich./Oak Park) to run 3:22.03 and capture the win in the 4x400m relay to close out the meet.
In the field events, Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne) won the high jump with a clearance of 2.03m (6-07.75) while Yvan Lopes Ribeiro (Nice, France/Lycée Honoré d’Estiennes d’Orves/American International) was the winner in the triple jump at 14.98m (49-01.75), a win that also gave the Eagles a sweep of the event coupled with Woods’ win in the women’s event. The final gold medal came from freshman Ryan Johnson (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro), who not only won the weight throw with a best of 20.85m (68-05.00), but also wrote his name in the all-time top 10 record book at No. 6.
How It Happened • Boston
A small contingent of Eagles traveled to Boston and ran with some of the best collegiate and post-collegiate athletes at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Opener. While Eastern runners were unable to capture an event victory, the Eagles posted personal-bests in seven of the 11 races ran with two women’s finishes ranking among the top 10 in program history. Esme Davies (Lake District, England/Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) and Paige Marchant (London, Ontario/Catholic Central) continued their fast ways from the cross country season as the duo recorded all-time top 10 marks in the long distance events, including Marchant running 9:23.90 to rank sixth all-time in the 3,000m run while Davies clocked in at 16:23.06 for the fifth-fastest time in EMU history in the 5,000m run.
Five other Eagles recorded personal-best times in their respective events, including three women and two men. Anita Zaro (Timisoara, Romania/Faculty of Physical Education and Sport) and Tabatha Walford (Northamptonshire, England/Bishop Stopford/Nevada) earned PRs in the 3,000m by running 9:55.91 and 10:05.24, respectively, while Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina/St. Matthew’s College) ran 17:17.05 for a personal-best in the 5,000m. On the men’s side, Lachlan Cornelius (Queensland, Brisbane, Australia/Anglican Church Grammar School) and Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) turned in PRs as they ran 8:57.56 in the 3,000m and 14:48.57 in the 5,000m, respectively.

Eastern returns to action following the holiday break with a trip down the street to Ann Arbor for the 2024 Wolverine Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, Saturday, Jan. 13. The one day meet, which will be held inside the U-M Indoor Track Building, will begin with field events at 9 a.m. and running events at 11 a.m.
