Travel expert shares tips for a wallet-friendly spring break

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Spring is right around the corner — and, if you book a flight now, your next vacation could be just as close!

“Airfare is averaging just over $250 round trip for spring break vacations in the U.S.,” said Hayley Berg, a representative for travel app Hopper. “That is lower than last year and lower than prices pre-pandemic.”

She gave 12 News some tips for affordable spring travel:

Buy airline tickets at least a month in advance.

“We recommend booking now if you are going to be flying in March and booking by mid-March if you are going to be traveling in mid-April,” Berg said.

Be flexible with your travel dates.

Berg said booking a flight on Tuesday or Wednesday can save you about 39% — “about $150 per ticket for domestic trips and a very similar amount for international trips.”

Plan for “spring break” prices.

Booking a hotel for spring break will likely still be pricey compared to non-spring break times. Berg’s suggestion? “Book in the last 48 hours before check-in in major cities and you can often save a lot — up to 30% on your hotel stay,” she told 12 News.

Expect delays.

Spring is the time of year when airlines open up their schedules to more flights and more destinations, Berg said. At the same time, unexpected weather can cause disruptions.

She recommends booking the first flight of the day to avoid overnight delays.
