Tri-County Urban League is raising awareness on men’s mental health

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Tri-County Urban League in Peoria offered free haircuts and resources to men to promote awareness for Mental Health Awareness month.

The league hosted “You Da Man” promoting love and support to men that struggle with mental health.

The event had a panel discussion with men in the mental health field, a barber showcase, fitness training and kid-friendly activities.

Event organizer Mariama Ford wants to end the stigma of men not talking about their mental health.

“Men are four times as likely to commit suicide than women are, even if they get help. So that to me says that they don’t have enough support in the community, in their family and their friends to be able to actually take the steps necessary to do that healing and recovery journey,” said Ford.

The Tri-County Urban League will hold their Black and White Gala on June 1 at the Peoria civic center.
