The Tripoli based Ministers of Economy and Trade Mohammed Al-Hwej, Labor and Rehabilitation Ali Al-Abed, and Head of the Executive Team for the President’s Initiatives and Strategic Projects Mustafa Al-Mana conducted a field visit last Thursday (16 January) to follow up on the completion stages of the commercial and entertainment complex project of the Islamic Call Society. Construction on the incomplete project has been stalled since the 2011 revolution.

Project must open on time
During the visit, the government team stressed the instructions of the Prime Minister, Abdel Alhamid Aldabaiba, to open the project on time, while adhering to the approved technical specifications for the materials used in construction and equipment, to achieve the highest quality standards. However, the government statement mentioned no timeline.

The project, which is being built on an area of more than 6 hectares in the Gurji area of Tripoli (off the Daren Motorway Roundabout), consists of several main facilities, including administrative offices, commercial banks, medical clinics, event halls, cafes, restaurants, and other spaces.

The incomplete project reflects the thousands of other stalled projects across Libya since 2011
Sadly, the incomplete project symbolises Libya’s and the thousands of other incomplete project’s plights since the 2011 revolution when work stopped, and foreign contractors fled. Outwardly, the project building looks complete but still needs detailed work internally.

‎A strategic development project
The Tripoli government said the complex is one of the strategic development projects that aim to provide integrated services and enhance economic and commercial activity, as the government team stressed the importance of speeding up the completion of works to ensure the readiness of the project on time.‎

In its statement, the government made no specific detailed steps it was taking to help the project reach completion. It must also be recalled that this is not the first time that the government has stated that a stalled project is important and must be completed – with no discernible outcome.
