TV tonight: people face their phobias in a therapy room

The Fear Clinic: Face Your Phobia

8pm, Channel 4

An utterly fascinating visit to the Amsterdam therapy room that specialises in overcoming extreme phobias. Dr Merel Kindt’s 48-hour programme forces clients to face their fears in a safe environment. You just want to hug Ollie, who has a phobia of balloons and cries when one is popped. And poor Nick, who is terrified of mice, has a terrible reaction when he’s asked to step in a box with them. Hollie Richardson

Silent Witness

9pm, BBC One

The team have an expertly severed head, rather than the full cadaver, to work on as they chase down the murderer of a barrister. The gruesome dismemberment motif adds jeopardy to what is otherwise the usual stiff shuffle towards an underwhelming conclusion. Jack Seale

Long Lost Family Special: The Spanish Baby Scandal

9pm, ITV1

In 1992, Ruth Appleby had her first child while living in Spain, but was told her baby died soon after birth. Now evidence suggests her daughter may have been stolen or sold as part of a national scandal. Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell investigate. Graeme Virtue

Manhunt

9pm, Channel 4

This episode of the true-crime documentary follows the Manchester-based case of a brutal stabbing in broad daylight that left a 24-year-old dead. The action is largely focused on the first 24 hours after the crime and the rush to obtain leads as quickly as possible, and highlights the stress this places on the police and the victim’s family. Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild

9pm, Channel 5

Ben Fogle standing in a field.

Father Johannes is an Austrian priest living a solitary life in the snowy mountains of Piedmont in Italy. Ben visits his tiny home – complete with a chapel – to find out more about his isolated existence. They have deep and meaningful chats about religion, while Johannes challenges Ben to do some carpentry and painting. HR

Pete Wicks: For Dogs’ Sake

9pm, U&W

An undeniably endearing series following Pete Wicks as he volunteers at Basildon’s Dogs Trust. His puppy poo-scooping is interrupted by the latest arrival, Dave the terrier, whose owners have left him with a broken leg that may need to be amputated. He also learns the mind-boggling fact that a litter of pups can have different dads. HR

Film choice

Shoah (Claude Lanzmann, 1985), 10pm, BBC Four

The railway tracks leading to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Being broadcast over two days, Claude Lanzmann’s nine-hour documentary tells – methodically but utterly heartbreakingly – the story of the Holocaust. Visiting sites across Poland including the Treblinka and Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps, he talks to survivors, local residents and perpetrators of the atrocities, bearing witness but also attempting to understand how such horrors could have occurred. There is no archive footage nor reconstructions with actors, just the testimony of those involved – images simply can’t do justice to what they reveal. Simon Wardell
