Two people have been shot dead in the Belgian capital Brussels on Monday evening, prosecutors have said.

The AFP news agency said the alleged attacker was still at large, according to prosecutors.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office said an investigation had been opened but did not speculate on the gunman’s motive.

According to Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws the victims were Swedes.

Sweden’s national football team are playing Belgium in a Euro 2024 qualifier, although it’s unclear whether the victims were in the city for the match.

Het Laatste Nieuws reported that the gunman, who used an automatic rifle, fled the scene.
