Two people suffered serious injuries when a motorist tried passing a vehicle in a no passing zone in Durham Thursday, causing a four-car crash that included a head-on collision.
The crash was reported at about 1:40 p.m. on Route 68 where a 33-year-old Middlefield resident heading west in a 2010 Honda Civic tried passing a 2022 Subaru Outback, according to Connecticut State Police.
State police described this area as a no passing zone and said the Honda collided head-on with a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu being driven east by a 22-year-old Middletown woman. The collision occurred not far from the area of Greenbacker Farm at 160 Wallingford Road.
Following the head-on collision, a 2012 Toyota Camry that was heading east behind the Chevy was also struck by the Honda, sending it into a spin out into the westbound lane, according to state police. State police said the Honda then struck the driver’s side rear area of the Subaru it was originally trying to pass.
The drivers of the Honda and the Chevy were each taken to Hartford Hospital for serious injuries, state police said. The other two drivers did not report any injuries.
State troopers are investigating the crash.
