Tyler Perry’s rapid rise continues, as he signs a multi-year first-look series deal with streaming behemoth Netflix. This expands on their existing cooperation, which already includes a film production pact.
The news coincides with the introduction of Perry’s first project under the new contract, a 16-episode drama titled Beauty in Black.
The first-look agreement gives Netflix preferential rights to produce and acquire new television series created by Perry. This is a big development for both parties, confirming Perry’s position as a key player in the television industry while also expanding Netflix’s content collection with programmes aimed at Black audiences.
Beauty in Black, written, directed, and produced by Perry, depicts the lives of two very different women: Kimmie, who is struggling to make ends meet after her mother kicks her out, and Mallory, who is a successful entrepreneur. Their paths cross, taking them on a voyage of self-discovery and personal development.
Perry’s prior partnerships with Netflix have been fruitful. Films like A Jazzman’s Blues, as well as upcoming films Six Triple Eight and Mea Culpa, highlight his unique storytelling abilities. This new series contract demonstrates Netflix’s faith in Perry’s talent and vision, with the goal of replicating the film’s success.
“I’m excited to expand my relationship with Netflix and tell more stories that resonate with our audience,” the actress said in a statement. “With ‘Beauty in Black,’ I wanted to explore the complexities of ambition, sisterhood, and finding your place in the world, all through the lens of Black women’s experiences.”
