U2 Performs Their Christmas Classic for the First Time in 36 Years, Shocking Fans

U2 fans have just received the biggest surprise of their lives.

The renowned rock band surprised fans with an unexpected rendition of Darlene Love’s festive favorite, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) during their U2:UV Achtung Baby show at Las Vegas’ Sphere on Friday – their final Vegas residency act for the year.

The performance, which was caught by a fan and uploaded on YouTube, was especially memorable because it was the first time U2 had performed the song live in 36 years, the last time being at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, during their 1987 Joshua Tree Tour.

The Edge opened the show by playing on an acoustic guitar, perplexing spectators. But the crowd surged almost immediately as Bono sung the iconic opening lyrics, “Christmas/ The snow’s coming down/ Christmas/ I’m watching it fall.”

The band embraced the 1963 holiday classic, slowing it down but maintaining loyal to their 1987 recording.

U2 transformed the performance into a heartwarming holiday serenade against a red-lit set, complete with bells and percussion.

The Irish rock band, which included singer Bono, the Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Bram van den Berg, initially covered the holiday classic for their charity compilation album, A Very Special Christmas, released it in 1987.
