UAE unveils federal law to strengthen its arts and culture sector

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has enacted a landmark federal decree-law designed to elevate the nation’s arts sector, aiming to foster creativity, attract talent, and bolster the creative economy.

The legislation sets a strategic framework for the regulation and development of non-profit arts institutions while providing significant benefits to artists and cultural organisations. This is reported by
Emirates News Agency (WAM), a partner of TV BRICS.

The decree-law focuses on encouraging artistic expression and inclusivity through initiatives such as private museums, temporary art exhibitions, and theatrical performances. By promoting tolerance and coexistence through creativity, the law seeks to create a thriving cultural landscape that resonates with local and global communities.

Under the new legislation, local authorities are empowered to offer incentives such as tax and customs exemptions to support artistic institutions and collections. These organisations can also benefit from financial aid through grants, sponsorships, and endowments, while simplified licensing procedures are overseen by the Ministry of Culture or regional authorities.

The scope of permissible artistic activities includes a wide array of disciplines such as visual and audio arts, performing arts, literature, music, and film screenings. The law also highlights the importance of new technologies and virtual platforms in broadening access to art collections and exhibitions.
