UCSC women’s basketball team loses lead, game to close Thanksgiving Classic


Celine Castaneda had eight points and four rebounds, as the UC Santa Cruz women’s basketball team lost to Cal Lutheran 59-45 to close the UCSC Thanksgiving Classic at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Sunday.

The Banana Slugs were outscored 38-19 in the second half.

Alexa Litchev had seven points and seven assists for UCSC. Alyssa Jackson had seven points and four assists, and teammates Lilli Hammons and Talysha Wilkerson each scored seven points.

UCSC was plagued by its 21 turnovers, and it made one of its 10 3-point attempts. Cal Lutheran made nine 3-pointers, and won the rebounding battle 36-32.

Sara Mills, named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, had 21 points and five rebounds to lead the Regals (2-3).

UCSC’s Jenna Gorton, Rivier’s Lyric Grumblatt, Bethany’s Ashleigh Wheeler, Redlands’ Aliyah Anderson, and Cal Lutheran’s Karina McMillan were named to the all-tournament team.

UCSC (4-2) plays at NCAA Division I UC Santa Barbara (3-2) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Men’s basketball

At Cabrillo 102, Cuesta 85:  Jalen Cunningham made six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points to lead the unbeaten Seahawks in their nonconference win Saturday.

It’s the third time this season that Cabrillo has eclipsed the 100-point mark on offense.

Taray Winfrey and Darius Best each had 16 points and five rebounds for the Seahawks. Solomon Tucker had 15 points and five rebounds, and reserve Cullen Cleaves had 11 points and five rebounds.

Cabrillo (7-0) hosts Alameda (1-6) in the Saltwater Classic on Friday at 5 p.m.

At Pacific Lutheran 91, UCSC 90: Zino Okah scored a game-high 25 points in the Banana Slugs’ loss Sunday in Portland, Oregon.

Tyler Kessinger had 12 points and five rebounds for UCSC, and Ian McCloskey, Joseph Espy, and Nelson Etuk each scored 11 points.

Sam Noland made a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to give the Lutes (4-0) a 91-87 lead. Etuk made a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final score.

UCSC (4-4) plays at Pomona-Pitzer (5-0) in Claremont on Sunday at 2 p.m.

UCSC 81, at Lewis & Clark 72: Treyson Keating and Zino Okah recorded double-doubles in the Banana Slugs’ win Saturday in Portland, Oregon.

Keating had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Okah had 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

The other UCSC players reached double digits in scoring: Tyler Kessinger had 11 points, and Ian McCloskey and reserve Wilson each scored 10.

UCSC made 21 of 30 free throws and won the rebounding battle 50-35.
