The Kentucky Wildcats had a huge offensive performance against Stonehill en route to a 101-67 victory. It wasn’t just the huge win, however, that people were talking about. It was how many 3s the team took and made.

Kentucky was red-hot from deep all night and wound up hitting 17 triples, which is the most under the John Calipari era. Freshman guard Reed Sheppard was responsible for seven of the 17 3s.

The previous high under Cal was 15, which was hit by both the 2009-10 and 2011-12 teams. Both of those squads won over 30 games, and this group certainly looks capable of topping that mark, even if we are just four games into the new season.

This was also the first time since 1996 that Kentucky has made 16 or more 3s in a game. So far this season, Calipari has allowed the team to shoot 3s at a higher rate than we’ve seen recently, and it’s beautiful.

In the opener, they shot 23 triples against Texas A&M Commerce. They also launched 38 attempts from deep against Kansas, and now 32 threes against Stonehill.

If the Cats can continue consistently making 3s, they will be a dangerous team, especially when the big men return. It also helps that Tre Mitchell is able to spread the floor by hitting 3s and being a good passer out of the post.

After dishing out four more against Stonehill, Mitchell is up to 13 assists through four games, a very high rate for a starting center. And it’s a big reason Kentucky is getting so many open looks on the perimeter, as evidenced by Calipari calling him the Cats’ “Zone buster” during postgame interviews.

Kentucky could have a potentially great team with a chance to compete for an NCAA Championship this year.
