The women

Her brand, The Garment, is among the names to follow during Copenhagen Fashion Week. The Danish cool girl par excellence, Sophia Roe, has curated a strong personal aesthetic that resonates with more than 500,000 loyal followers on Instagram. From her mother Louise Roe, an interior designer, Sophia inherited a clean aesthetic and a love of neutral tones that is evident both in her closet and her brand, The Garment, which she founded alongside Charlotte Eskildsen. As a leading figure in the Danish creative scene, Sophia Roe is involved in numerous projects and collaborates with both her close friends and fashion houses. She is always showing up with her infectious passion for design and fashion, always blended with her own minimalist approach.

Fashion

Fashion has always been instinctive. “As a child, I would stay up at night dressing my dolls, drawing, and doing collages whilst my parents were asleep. It almost felt like a meditative state of mind, and it still does, to enter a world full of imagination and limitless daydreaming.” From a very young age, Sophia was keen to work, working different jobs before going on to cut her teeth as an assistant stylist for Vogue Scandinavia and then later as one of their fashion editors. “I still use that knowledge and the same methods at The Garment. It brings meaning to the things I do today.” After finishing high school she originally thought that she would study architecture. “I decided to take a plane instead of an education – “It was the best decision and I can’t think of a better education for what I do. It continues to bring me new perspectives on life, on being creative, and on finding better tools for expression. I am blessed in that way, to be surrounded by strong opinionated people, all with completely different approaches to life.” Since then, her love for fashion has grown organically and is constantly evolving. “The feeling of freedom and independence was something I truly enjoyed. I see a lot of young people questioning taking a job not relevant to what they aspire to do. But really one should try to succeed in any job to develop a work ethic and gain experience. Even wanting to work in fashion this applies too and the only way to learn it is to get a job – whether it’s relevant for your future or not – because at a point in your life, it will be.”

Sophia’s style

Sophia Roe’s style is minimalist with Scandinavian influences and a focus on materials, yet always with a timeless approach, “but always leaving room for surprises. Sophia Roe admitted that she always dreamed of seeming less boyish and eccentric while growing up. “Really, I found out boyish is just me being free from this traditional woman/girl figure I think society wants me to be. I think as I became older I realized I am a perfect mixture of all kinds of women, but embracing some more than others. I feel good becoming grounded in the characters I am.” In her day-to-day life, Sophia says that she connects with her masculine energy. “I think I like to balance it out by adding a feminine touch to the way I dress.” Although she often wears a monochromatic neutral color palette, as adopted by her mother, her character is full of paradoxes “I have a very colorful life. And color-rich approach to it. I am properly more rebellious than I dress. It’s about balancing, all the time, right?”
