Remember Andy’s (Anne Hathaway) lead-in into the world of decoding the what and how of the fashion industry and transforming into a hot-shot sartorial maven from a sartorial sceptic with the help of Nigel (Stanley Tucci), Runway’s art director in the movie The Devil Wears Prada? Did we not all hate Miranda (Meryl Streep), love the iconic fashion moments, and pray that we all had one Nigel in our lives? The Runway’s wardrobe was probably a fantasy of each and every one of us, invoking among the teenage us (read: the adult us as well) the hope and euphoria that maybe we can have an ‘Andy metamorphosis’ moment as well!
And, while we cannot help you with a Nigel (we really wish we could), we can surely give you an insight into this year’s fashion trend repertoire so that you can ace your ensemble every day. And, with the summer/spring 2024 fashion month wrapping up, there’s much you should look forward to adding to your closet. But before that, visit your closet because bows, floral prints and capris are back this year, and you might just end up with a few of such pieces that have been gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe, and who knows, with a few re-equip, you might just get to attain your Breakfast at Tiffany’s moment!
Say yes to bold, pop colours
Bold, vibrant and pop colours might just be what the doctor ordered. While most of us have a neutral wardrobe essential in hand at all times for office ensembles, adding a pop of colour this year to your outfits, whether hanging out with friends or going for an office dinner, might be enough to let people know that the fashionista in you is alive and kicking. “Bright hues of yellow, parrot green, aubergine, and dark hues of blue are just some of the colours you need to keep an eye out for,” comments Sayantani Ghosh, merchandiser and buyer at Spykar.

Polos are back in the game
While boho maxi skirts, crochets, and cargo pants ruled the year 2023, 2024’s inclination lies in neat and classic ensembles. Enter the game: polo shirts, pants and those early-day blazers. The Miu Miu spring 2024 ready-to-wear collection saw ramp being reigned by polo shirts, and when Prada brings back a style, you know it’s going to stay this year.
Bow to the ‘Bows’
Have you seen those trending bow earrings on Instagram? Well, gear up, because 2024 is going to be the year of the bow. This feminine accessory was at the epitome of the spring-summer fashion shows, with models embracing their girl era (you should too) and accessing them with hair, as earrings, in bags and definitely garments.
Neo Preppy: Classy is not dead yet
Yes, the season of polos is back, and with that, the neo-preppy style is back too. Elevate your sartorial clothing by getting back to the classics when tired of the buzzing trends (well, neo-preppy is trending, too). The tailored jackets, blazers, and Oxford button-downs—several brands are making sure these classic styles are not completely forgotten (albeit with a bit of evolution).
Floral prints are making a comeback
“Florals will be top sellers this year,” says Sulagna Dasgupta, a graphic designer and communication designer working at Nykaa Fashion. The 2024 spring-summer fashion month saw florals acing the ramp walk. From huge stylised floral rosettes to graphic florals that give a hand-drawn pattern depiction, floral prints are not going anywhere. So whether you have a floral top or an Indo-western fusion co-ord set lying deep inside your closet, it’s time to get it out.
White- the paradigm shifter
While 2024 is definitely going to be all about getting that feminine era back, this year is also going to be about forecasting the ‘boss lady’ that’s within you. How? The achromatic hue ‘white’ is supposed to hold sway among fashionistas this year. While pop colours and floral prints are surely going to be in vogue, there’s something about white (imagine an all-white power suit or an enticing all-white saree) that is bound to make eyes turn towards you.
Revival of the Capris
Just like bows and neo-preppy are coming back, capris are also taking centre stage. How do you style this silhouette? Maybe grab a pair of loafers, some flats, or a crop top and get back to the 90s vibe.
Bell-bottom jeans are going nowhere
“While we did see an inclination towards tight, skinny-fit jeans in the past few years, there’s been a change in the denim landscape since last year. The buying pattern of skinny jeans has decreased, while bellbottoms, flared jeans and high-rise trousers have completely taken over everyone’s wardrobe. Also, look out for embellished jeans,” adds Sayantani Ghosh. While jeans are everyday practical clothing, the global fashion icons made sure to subtly flaunt this silhouette with subtle designs that are a must-have in your wardrobe.
Say hello to ‘Peach Fuzz’
Pantone has declared the colour of the year 2024 as ‘Peach Fuzz’, and fashion enthusiasts are already gearing up to add this warm, comforting colour to their wardrobes. With a colour that sports both the hues of pink and orange, you can definitely style your core colour element with other warmer, darker tones of pink, red and orange. Also, try dark-coloured denim and incorporate white for a pop of vibrancy with your peach fuzz pieces.
Metallics are here for the long haul
Gracing the spring/summer runway, metallics have made a comeback this year ( did it ever really leave us?), and if you wish to be a head turner this year, whether at a party or a brunch, a metallic choker, belt or a top paired with tailored pants is a must-have in your wardrobe. Or maybe give in and go for those metallic pairs of boots that you have been eyeing for a long time. Also, a versatile metallic skirt in subtle tones would be the perfect game-changer for your evening OOTD.
The resurgence of quiet luxury
While quiet luxury did dominate a fashionista’s wardrobe in 2023, this trend is still going to be a hot favourite in the present year. For the ‘old money aesthetic’, pair a knit classy sweater with a logoless bag and some kitten heels or a classic pair of black shoes. Exude confidence and elegance with these pieces because when you pair everything together, you’ll be complete perfection.
