US issues worldwide travel warning for Americans

The United States Department of State is issuing a worldwide travel warning for Americans due to increased tensions around the globe.

The worldwide caution urges travelers to be more aware of potential terror attacks and violence towards Americans.

International travelers at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Friday told WRAL News the worldwide caution is top of mind as they head overseas.

The notice from the U.S. Department of State reads:

Flights at RDU on Friday were departing for Canada, Iceland, France and England, and other local travelers were heading to cities like New York and Washington, D.C., to catch other international flights.

Multiple travelers told WRAL News their trips have been planned for months if not more than a year. In some cases, they’ve already had other travel advisories for their destinations.

While they’re not planning to cancel their trips, the travelers said the alert will make them more cautious while they’re out of the country.

“It made me less likely to want to venture off … [and more likely to] just stay with the group in the tourist areas, which is what the caution said to do,” said international traveler Hilary Campbell.

WRAL News spoke with several travelers who said they are headed to the Middle East, and because of past travel alerts, they had already enrolled in the STEP program to help the State Department locate them in case of an emergency.
