USDA Limits ‘Made in the USA’ Label Requirements

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is presenting a new rule that would limit the types of products eligible for the “Product of the United States” or “Made in the United States” label. Only born, farmed, slaughtered, and processed in the U.S. meat, poultry, and egg products will be allowed.

Currently, firms can place this mark on meat from animals grown in a foreign nation but slaughtered in the United States, or meat that was slain in a foreign country but repackaged in the United States.

The agency stated that the modification complies with President Joe Biden’s executive order to encourage American products and producers and another administration directive to increase competition in the meat and poultry supply chain.

Tom Vilsack, secretary of agriculture, stated in a press release that when Americans purchase a meat product from a grocery store, they want the claims on the label to be accurate. “These proposed modifications are meant to give consumers with accurate information so they may make informed purchasing decisions.”

But, the label will remain optional, and producers will not be required to obtain approval from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Maintain supporting documents for an inspector to review at their choice.

The regulation amendment is currently open for public discussion.
