BOISE, Idaho — Utah State men’s tennis was represented by fifth-year Bodin Zarkovic, junior David Martirosian, and freshman Philipp Rein on the first day of competition at the Boise State-hosted General Patton Invite on Friday.
Competition began with doubles play where Zarkovic and Martirosian had a first-round bye in the main draw, followed by a 6-2 win over Idaho’s Taiyo Kurata and Yu-Shun Lai in the round of 16.
Rein was paired with Eastern Washington junior Brady Thomas for doubles play where they lost their main draw match against BYU’s Redd Owen and TJ Wells, 6-2.
In the round of 16 of the A Draw of singles play, Zarkovic defeated fellow Serbian Luka Jovanovich of Portland State in a third set tiebreaker. He went on to beat Montana State-Bozeman sophomore Maximillian Relic in a 7-5, 6-3 victory to advance into the semifinals.
Rein also went undefeated in singles play as he took his round of 16 match of the B Draw in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Portland State junior Cade Edwards. In the B Draw quarterfinals, Rein defeated Boise State’s Teague Burger, 6-4, 6-3, to move on to the semifinals.
Utah State men’s tennis continues singles and doubles play at the General Patton Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 10 a.m.
