The University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville has been named one of the top 250 hospitals in the world by Newsweek magazine.
The hospital was ranked No. 1 in Virginia, No. 39 in the U.S. and No. 236 in the entire world.
“This ranking shows the great strides we are making,” UVa Health CEO Craig Kent said in a statement announcing the news. “It’s a tribute to every member of our team and their commitment to provide exceptional patient care.”
Newsweek’s recognition comes on the heels of UVa Health being listed as one of America’s best large employers by Forbes magazine. The health system was ranked No. 117 overall and No. 24 among health systems.

The U.S. dominated the podium in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2024,” with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester ranked No. 1 followed by the Cleveland Clinic. While Toronto General, another public academic health system, was named third, two more U.S. hospitals were ranked No. 4 and No. 5: Johns Hopkins Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, respectively.

Newsweek created its annual list of the world’s top medical centers in partnership with Statista, a third-party surveying platform, using data on 2,400 hospitals spanning 30 countries. Scores are determined after analyzing information from online surveys of 85,000-plus medical experts, post-hospitalization patient reviews, what are called “Patient Reported Outcome Measures” and other items such as general hygiene and patient-to-doctor ratios.
“Delivering best-in-class healthcare is a promise most hospitals offer, but only a few achieve true excellence,” Newsweek’s director of growth and strategic partnerships Josh Smith said in a statement. “Our ‘World’s Best Hospitals’ list is a guide for readers to identify the best healthcare facilities and providers for their specific needs.”

The Newsweek ranking is only the latest accolade for UVa Health.
Late last year, medical news and information site WebMD named UVa Health the “best in class” health system in the commonwealth for its cancer, heart, orthopedics, neurology and digestive care. A month prior, Newsweek named the health system among the “world’s best” in neurosurgery, oncology and cardiology. Before the year closed, the American Association for Men in Nursing named UVa one of the “Best School for Men in Nursing.”
