UWS tennis experts teach basics to Superior students

SUPERIOR — The Lake Superior third, fourth and fifth graders had an opportunity to learn tennis from some experts at the beginning of November. On Monday and Wednesday when physical education teacher Mrs. Hanson was with the class, the University of Wisconsin-Superior tennis coach CeeJay Schaffner brought a few players to teach tennis basics.

They brought tennis rackets and tennis balls from the university. The students were very excited about using the equipment. All of the students had to wear name tags because the tennis coaches didn’t know everyone. Some of the things they taught the students were side hits and to hit in the middle of the racket where the mesh is.

The coaches played a game where they threw tennis balls at the students and the students tried to hit them over a net. On Wednesday, the second day of tennis, they played a couple of different games.

“It was really fun to learn because I didn’t know how to play tennis, ” said fifth grader Ayla Johnstad.
