Get ready to smile, cheer and maybe even do a little dancing in the aisles as the youth of the Vail Performing Arts Academy take you on a musical journey this weekend with its fall production, “Make Believe.”
“Make Believe” is a magical musical revue that goes from the jungle with “Tarzan,” to the snowy surroundings of “Frozen II” and “Over the Rainbow” with the “Wizard of Oz.” The engaging production promises to be a feast for the senses, teeming with popular songs, timeless show tunes, and cinematic classics.
The cast of this fall’s revue range in age from 8 to 16 years old. The students have been practicing since September to get the lyrics and choreography ready to go for this weekend’s performances. The performers may be young, but the music will appeal to all ages. These songs aren’t just from Disney tales, you’ll even hear music from “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” and if you like Cher, listen for an inspiring rendition of her hit single from 1998, “Believe,” sung by some of the members of the cast.
The Vail Performing Arts Academy’s mantra is “The Most Important Stage in a Child’s Life” and it truly is a place where kids can shine, show their talents, learn valuable life skills and have some fun. The youth are supported by an amazing group of professionals who take their talents and share them with the students. Colin Meiring is a veteran of Broadway and leads the cast with his artistic direction and choreography. Melinda Carlson helps the kids hit the right notes with her musical direction and everyone is looking sharp due to the talents of Val Watts, costume designer for “Make Believe.”
For those who don’t want to be center-stage, there’s a place for them, too. Behind-the-scenes roles are filled with students and even alumni who want to help ensure the longstanding tradition of excellence the Vail Performing Arts Academy is known for.

Running the show is the founder and executive producer, Annah Scully. Scully has showcased the talents of children since she formed this nonprofit in 1995. Since then, the Vail Performing Arts Academy has hosted a vast selection of musical performances and shaped the lives of youth who gained confidence and found their voice performing in shows year after year.
Come out and support local theater and see “Make Believe” on Saturday and Sunday. The performances will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards.
