Vallejo Center for Art to host annual two-week camp in July

The Vallejo Center for Art is calling on young aspiring artists ages 5 to 13, to attend its annual two-week summer camp centered on artistic expression and developmental skills.

From July 14 through July 26, the immersive opportunity will guide young creatives as they dive into visual and performing arts. On the visual side, the agenda includes the typical drawing, painting, and photography, as well as more unique avenues like silk screening, linocut printing, alcohol inks, collage and clay.

Performance-wise, the camp will touch on skills pertaining to acting and essential “know-how’s” for dealing with live audiences as well as behind-the-scenes roles like screenwriting, costume, and scenic design.

Attendees will also work closely with an impressive group of experienced artists and entertainers in rare intimate sessions. Alvon Johnson, internationally acclaimed guitarist and singer as well as former member of the iconic rock band Boston, David Sikes, are set to indulge music-goers.

For aspiring thespians, the center has award-winning comedian turned stand-up coach, Johnny Steele, accomplished theater and improv teacher Jennifer Schemke, and the locally-known Production and Technical Director at the Empress Theatre, Jay Johnson.

For those interested in visual arts, there is Vallejo’s Gene Buban, who is a digital graffiti artist, public art creator, and teacher within the realm of hip-hop and dance. The camp will also feature the return of Brandon Borrayo, a longtime camp counselor.

The creativity-driven camp offers young artists the opportunity to truly hone their craft, “express themselves, and be inspired by world-class artists,” said VCA partner Deanna Troupe in a news release.

At the end of week two, the camper’s artwork and visual displays will be publicized as an art exhibition at the Temple Arts Loft followed by a live performance on the Empress Theatre stage.

The “fun and supportive environment,” as described by Troupe, “offers campers the unique opportunity to develop new skills.”

The camp is on a first-come-first-serve basis and for information regarding registration, visit vallejoarts.org.
