Victoria Beckham Just Resurrected Her Signature Nineties Short Bob

Think of Victoria Beckham and a clean-cut aesthetic (see: a monochromatic wardrobe, signature smokey eye and long, chocolate flowing lengths) probably spring to mind. For years, the fashion designer, mother-of-four and singer has rarely strayed away from her trademark style, but as she stepped out in Los Angeles with her family this week, something was notably different.

Resurrecting one of her most iconic hairstyles from her Spice Girls era, Beckham has sidelined her extra-long hair and brought back her iconic bob, adding a new-season twist to the ever-popular cut.

Those in the millennial bracket will remember Beckham’s Posh Spice days, when her short crop became such a trademark, it was given the moniker ‘the pob’ and soon after countless iterations, from her iconic highlighted pixie cut to the nostalgic inverted lob, followed. Rare is it now for Beckham to shake things up in the hair department, and after years of holding onto the same hairstyle, it seems she’s in the mood to experiment once more.

The hairstyle in question is a Nineties-inspired bob – complete with soft texture and slightly elongated ends – that stylists are hailing the haircut of the season. Hailey Bieber was among the first to debut the Nineties power bob, refreshing her French girl short crop for this more effortless ‘do. Now, experts are predicting the Nineties bob to take centre stage on our beauty moodboards this Autumn, superseding the razor sharp and cleaner micro-bobs that have been dominating over the summer months.

‘The key to a Nineties bob is that everything is a bit more undone so it’s all about making it look like you didn’t make an effort. It’s about putting a bit of a dent in the bob rather than making them look more blow dried or “done”,’ Paul Percival, Percy & Reed brand founder and leading session stylist, explains. ‘You want to make it look like you just woke up and have a really cool kink in your hair.’

As illustrated by Victoria Beckham’s soft tousled ends, the allure of the Nineties bob is centred on ease. It’s effortless and verging on insouciant, and needs very little in the way of styling.

‘To style, I would pick up big sections of hair, mist with the Flexible Hold Hairspray – which also functions as a heat protectant – and wind half the hair around a curling wand leaving the end out,’ says Percival. ‘Count to three and let it off. What you’re doing is creating just a little bit of movement almost like you tucked it behind your ear or you slept on it. You don’t want it to be a polished curl,’ he concludes.
