CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Intense video shows the fiery ending to a police chase that ended in west Charlotte over the weekend.
The crash happened early Sunday morning after beginning in Gaston County. It is one of several chases in the area that ended in crashes over the past couple of weeks.
Moments after a car went airborne and crashed into several cars, surveillance cameras captured the moment the car stopped and burst into flames.
The owner of T&T Auto Sales, Miguel Tovar, said his security system alerted him.
“I just know that my phone vibrated because of the cameras, and we came to see what was going on and we then saw that a car flew over onto our business and destroyed everything,” he said.
About 10 cars that were parked on the lot are damaged or destroyed.
The crash stems from Gaston County Police chasing Jaiquvous William. Police attempted to execute a warrant in Gastonia for pointing a gun and damaging property. Police stopped him in a driveway before he took off.
Police deflated his tires before he crossed into Mecklenburg County, triggering assistance from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
The chase reportedly ended just after 1:30 a.m., and police found that Williams crashed minutes later.
“We want to know what happened and if the person driving has insurance on the car,” Tovar said. “We don’t really know anything.”
Tovar said he is waiting to see how the insurance process plays out, but estimates the damages to be around $200,000.
“They are all damaged to a certain extent,” he said. “I don’t know what else to do. We just have to wait on what the police report says.”
Police are still searching for Williams after he ran away from the crash. He faces firearm charges and felony possession of a controlled substance after police said drugs were found in the car.
