Viking Men’s Basketball Adds Two to Signing Class

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana men’s basketball National Champion head coach Tom Billeter has announced the signing of two additional student-athletes as part of the 2024 signing class. The Vikings are set to welcome Don Coats III and Awit Mamer to the 2024-25 squad.

Coats will have two years of eligibility after transferring from Parkland College where he currently has the Cobras ranked No. 4 in the nation for NJCAA while averaging 12.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He shoots the long ball at a 45 percent clip and has tallied a trio of double-doubles as part of the 9-0 start to the season.

“Don brings us versatility and experience,” Billeter said. “He is a very good defender and has the ability to score in different ways. He plays for a very good program and is currently undefeated. Coach Bowler does a great job at Parkland and we are excited to add Don to our team.”

The 6-7 forward from Chicago, Illinois, averaged 9.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game as a freshman while recording seven double-doubles while helping the Cobras to the District Championship of the NJCAA National Tournament.

Mamer, hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, is spending 2023-24 at We Are United Prep Academy in Springfield, Missouri. Prior to his prep year, Mamer played at Central High School in Omaha where he averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game as a senior. In addition, the 6-4 guard dished four assists and tallied two steals per outing.

“Awit is a very athletic guard who can score many different ways and has the potential to be an outstanding defensive player,” Billeter added. “He has a love for the game and continues to receive excellent instruction at We Are United Prep under the supervision of Coaches Sylvester Yanders and Craig Smith. Awit will be a great addition to our perimeter next season.”

As a junior, he led his team to a District Runner-Up finish including a 19-8 record.
