VIRGINIA, Minn. — A man was killed and a Virginia police officer was being treated for severe burns Thanksgiving day after a mental health call turned into a fire.
The call came in just before 5 a.m. Thursday at an apartment building on the 100 block of 2nd Street North.
Police said the man was threatening to burn the building down. A fire later ignited.
Officers tried to get the man to come out, but the building was soon engulfed.
Multiple agencies responded to put out the flames.
The man was found dead inside.
A Virginia police officer was hospitalized with severe burns to multiple part of his body. A second officer was treated and released from a hospital for smoke inhalation.
A cause of the fire is under investigation.
