Visual Arts Center of New Jersey to explore themes of place and space in winter/spring exhibitions

On Feb. 7, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit will open a series of exhibitions that explore ideas around “the spaces we occupy and how we interact with them.” Running through May 18, the shows will feature various forms of media including technology, textiles and printmaking.

In the Main Gallery, the Baltimore-based collective strikeWare will present “ETA: Rerouted,” a traveling exhibition that uses media and technology to examine transit-related occurrences. The show, curated by VACNJ’s Jordan Horton, first opened in November 2024 at VisArts in Rockville, Maryland, as part of their Emerging Curator Program.

Iranian artist Leila Seyedzadeh will create a new installation featuring mended textiles inspired by her heritage and landscapes for her solo exhibition “Under the Sky, Above the Sea” in the Mitzi and Warren Eisenberg Gallery. The Art Center will host a related Fabric Dyeing Workshop on April 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

New Jersey printmaker Michael Dal Cerro will display bustling ecological cityscapes influenced by classical architecture, expressionism and woodblock prints in his solo show “Not Built in a Day” in the Marité & Joe Robinson Strolling Gallery.

The Art Center will hold a free Last Look closing event on May 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. with an informal artist talk and reception.

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is a nonprofit dedicated to contemporary art through exhibitions, studio school, and outreach initiatives serving diverse audiences. It is located at 68 Elm St. in Summit.
