STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Wagner College Theatre is set to present “And Away We Go,” a vibrant journey through the history of theater penned by acclaimed playwright Terrence McNally. The production, directed by Professor Theresa McCarthy, will run from Nov. 21-24 at Stage One on Wagner College’s Grymes Hill campus.
“And Away We Go” playfully explores the timeless question: Why choose a life in the theater? McNally’s love letter to the stage is an epic romp through 2,000 years of theater history. Six versatile actors will embody a wide array of characters, portraying 36 figures from different eras of theatrical development.
The play begins backstage in ancient Athens and travels to Shakespeare’s Globe, the Royal Theatre in Versailles before the French Revolution, Moscow’s Art Theatre in 1896, Miami’s Coconut Grove in the 1950s, and culminates in a modern-day theater company on the brink of its final performance. With its humorous and heartfelt storytelling, the play offers a poignant homage to the world of live performance.
The performances are scheduled for Nov. 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m., two shows on Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m, and a final matinee on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. Theater-goers can find parking in the Tiers Lot Visitor Parking and the Stadium Parking Lot, with GPS directions to the main entrance available at 631 Howard Ave., Staten Island.
