Waiting out the cold snap: Indoor entertainment in Maine

Looking for something fun to do without freezing your boots off? Check out these suggestions below.

MAINE, USA — Let’s be honest, it’s cold outside — not your typical cold, but that put on your long johns and double up your socks, kind of cold.

As Mainers we try and make the best of our chilly season, with skiing, skating, snowshoeing, and more, but what do you do when it’s too cold to stay outside? NEWS CENTER Maine spoke with some businesses and nonprofits about fun ways to spend your days indoors.

Portland

If you want to explore your artistic talents, Muse Paintbar in Portland might be what you’re looking for. The venue located on Commercial Street offers the chance to meet new people, have a glass of wine, and create a seasonally charged piece of art you can proudly hang in your home.

“The colder months are indeed a busy time for Muse,” one employee said.

In addition to a fabulous art class, Muse sells a wide variety of snacks and beverages you can enjoy on your artistic adventure.

Bath

If you have a thirst for knowledge, Maine has some fantastic museums. The Maine Maritime Museum in Bath offers a discounted rate for tickets during the winter —  $14 for adults and $12 for seniors and members, and children under 17, always get in for free.

Marketing Communications Manager Amanda Pleau said they hope the discounted rates and colder temperatures will encourage people to visit this historic museum.

Pleau said a new exhibit “Upon That Isle in Maine: The Story & Works of Chris Van Dusen” will open on Feb. 8. “A family-friendly, interactive exhibit exploring the whimsical work of the beloved Maine author.”

Scarborough

Maybe you’re an athlete, or simply looking for a new hobby. Well, Salt Pump Climbing Co. in Scarborough has got you covered.

“The higher you climb at SP, the warmer it gets,” employee Tino Fiumara, said. “Winter is indeed our busiest season for indoor climbing here in Maine, but people climb regularly all year!”

Fiumara said indoor rock climbing “feels like play” and that Salt Pump has designed its terrain to be accessible for folks with zero rock climbing experience.

No reservations are required, he said. All you need to do is show up, fill out a waiver, get a day pass and rentals, and staff will give you a tour and orientation of the gym. Fiumara said some of their youngest climbers are three to four years old, while some of their oldest are in their 80s.

If none of these activities piqued your interest, here are more ideas:

  • Take in a double feature at the movies
  • Go to a play at one of Maine’s many theaters
  • Check out a Mariners or Maine Celtics game
  • Buy that concert ticket you’ve been eyeing
  • Visit a spa you enjoy
  • Visit your local library and enjoy some new book releases

The entertainment possibilities are endless in Maine. Stay warm!
