1. Layer in Warmer Tones

This tip will play into each of the tips below, but it is worth pointing out: You don’t have to totally overhaul your space if you’ve been leaning into cool colors and want to take a warmer approach. Sometimes bringing in some warmth is as easy as mixing some warm tones with existing cool ones.

“These colors are very versatile and can be mixed and matched to create a space that reflects different personalities,” says Afshar. “While blues and grays are still very popular, homeowners are looking for ways to change things up, and these warm shades pair very well with natural elements and provide an opportunity for layering materials.”

For example, you can add a warmer accent wall instead of painting the entire room. Instead of tossing out your white throw pillows, layer in a few warmer tan ones on each couch. You can even put covers on your couches if you want a larger swap, but keep smaller chairs the same color. Especially if you’re already leaning heavily into neutral tones, these colors can play very well together and even small changes can have a big impact.

2. Change Hardware and Other Accents

While chrome or matte black accents can create a cool and serene aesthetic, if you’re looking to shift the vibe, sometimes examining your hardware can be a cost-effective way to make a big impact.

There are tons of different, warmer metallic accents you can choose from—including gold, brass and copper. If your walls were already leaning very cold (think stark white with blue undertones), swapping to a warmer metal can prove trickier, so bringing home a few shades to test out can be helpful. Luckily items like cabinet pulls can be just a few dollars, making experimenting pretty low-risk.

Another accent to consider is a classic: wood. Warm wood tones are trending too, which is no surprise since they pair so well with these neutrals.

“The warmth of wood is everywhere as well, especially in cabinetry,” read the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)’s 2024 trend report. “Wood beams can be incorporated into ceilings to refine the home, and even exteriors are incorporating wood or low-maintenance wood-mimicking materials to create a welcoming façade.”

While including natural wood where you can is great, Afshar also pointed to materials like Cosentino’s upcoming Dekton line with porcelain that looks like wood but stands up better in spaces like kitchens. Choosing materials that mimic wood is an easy way to bring in more warmth without sacrificing durability.

3. Add Texture

Warmth in a room doesn’t just have to come from color: It can also come from cozy accents that, yes, may just so happen to come in beautiful sandy shades. Bringing in fuzzy throws, shearling pillow covers and plush, beige rugs can be a great way to pull double duty here. Not only will you be layering in warmer colors, but you’ll also be adding visual interest to the room, which can help change the vibe from sterile to welcoming. Bonus points if the item actually makes you feel warm—literally.

4. Switch to Warmer-Toned Light

Another simple, cost-effective swap comes from light. Maybe you are a fan of the dreaded “big light” aka the overhead lighting in your rooms. Try switching to lamps with warmer-toned shades complete with warmer-toned bulbs. Again, this can require some experimentation to get the right shade, especially if your room is extremely cool-toned, but with a little experimentation, you can get it just right.

5. Let Your Personality Shine

Even rooms decked out with the dreamiest caramel and putty shades can feel cold if they have no personality. Don’t be afraid to add personal touches to your rooms to make them come together. Adding things like plants with colorful pots, picture frames, entertainment systems full of games and more can help the room really come together and make it all the more welcoming.
