Warren General Hospital is in the process of updates, both physically and technologically.
On the physical end, the hospital is in the midst of a three-phase renovation of its maternity, women’s health and OB/GYN surgery, and pediatric units.
As of Oct. 6, the maternity and women’s health projects have been completed, according to Mary Ridout, WGH director of marketing and communications. The pediatric phase began earlier this month on Oct. 9.
The update to the maternity unit included installation of computer wall units to enhance bedside care and updated computers at the central nurse station.
The hospital is also updating its emergency room in a two-phase project. The first phase, the triage area, was updated this year according to a report CEO Rick Allen gave the hospital boards at their annual meeting. The second phase is slated to begin in the spring, according to Ridout.
The hospital also plans upgrades to electrical and plumbing systems, completion of a roofing project and completion of the facility’s generator project in the upcoming year.
On the technology side, the hospital is implementing Meditech Expanse technology to provide web-based electronic health records.
“This … allows our organization to move from six to eight platforms to a singular electronic platform,” Ridout said. “Providers at any point in the system will have access to patient care and information. One patient portal which used to be a physician and hospital is now a single portal for everyone. It allows nurses and caregivers to spend more time with the patient and not documentation.”
From the patient standpoint, it will allow “virtual appointment offerings and self-service options,” according to Allen’s report.
