‘We are in good hands with the next generation of fashion designers’: SCAD hosts annual fashion show


The Savannah College of Art of Design’s fashion show is one of the iconic events in Savannah for up-and-coming designers. For senior Ellie Byrd, it was a lightbulb moment when she decided to design.”I was looking through a magazine, and I was like, ‘I think I could try this out,” Byrd said.Ana Achurra, another SCAD fashion show designer, has the same feelings. “I’m going to do this, I’m going to sew it,” Achurra said.They got to showcase their designs to hundreds at the Friday night fashion show. “They set us up to work extremely hard, as hard as you possibly can to achieve your goals,” Byrd said.Celebrity Kelly Ripa was in attendance. Ripa raved on their abilities during a Monday “Kelly and Mark” morning show on ABC News.“It was so gorgeous. I feel like we are in good hands with the next generation of fashion designers. It was beautiful and extraordinarily intricate, and they tell a story,” Ripa said.The designs have become so personal to the ones that made them.“My collection is a fusion between both of my cultures, Panamanian and Chinese. I grew up in Panama, but I attended a Chinese school,” Achurra said.For Byrd, it’s all about the ones that wear them.“That’s my favorite part ever. I want the person who wears the clothes to feel something visceral and to feel like they can make something or create something,” Byrd said. It was a start to a bright career in fashion for both Byrd and Achurra.”It was it was an incredible experience to see your garments walked on a runway in a model that I know personally was was a real experience. My time at SCAD has been one of a kind,” Byrd said.Next year’s show will be held in Atlanta.
