TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Experts say music classes for young children can help develop their brains, fine motor skills, and lay the foundation of forming relationships.
Valerie Anderson is the instructor of the Music Makers class that takes place at the Tyler public Library. She has been teaching these classes for 10 years now after she attended them with her kids.
“Music Makers is a mommy and me class that helps with connecting to our kids. It uses a lot of different parts of the brain, and it helps kids to memorize things easier and it gets them thinking,” Anderson said.
The children sing, dance, and play with instruments throughout the duration of the class.
UNICEF.org says exposing your child to music at a young age can improve your baby’s mood, reduce stress levels and stimulate the formation of dopamine and oxytocin, which can help social interaction. It also improves concentration, learning, productivity, and spatial intelligence which is the brain’s ability to process visual information.
“I think it helps kids connect with their body and movement when they are dancing and clapping their hands and shaking a tambourine,” Anderson said.
Carly Hicks attends the class with her son after she found out about it through an online parent group. She has noticed developmental changes in her son since starting the class.
“He knows most of the songs that we sing already, and he sings them at home and he has gotten more social since we have been coming. He is also learning routine when we come here, we do the same thing every week and its really helpful for their schedule and development,” Hicks said.
Music Makers takes place at the Tyler Public Library every other Monday. It’s a free class and walk-ins are welcome.
