West Melbourne mom booked after police said she left children in car to go to bar

A 33-year-old mother was arrested after West Melbourne police said left her 8-month-old and 2-year-old children in a running car for at least 20 minutes while she visited with a friend inside a bar.

Jamie Leigh Gunn was charged with child neglect Monday after a West Melbourne police officer spotted the children sleeping in the back seat of a black sport utility vehicle parked behind Penny Annie’s Bar on Minton Road, court records show. The children were not injured.

The officer located Gunn, who police said immediately asked about whether she would be taken to jail. Gunn was handcuffed and taken to the Brevard County Jail Complex in Sharpes where she was held on a $15,000 bond.

Police and medical experts frequently remind the public not to leave children or pets in vehicles.
