The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts (WCPA) is presenting a Halloween stage production of Gaslight, by Patrick Hamilton at the historic Jones Theater, 119 Main Street in Westcliffe. The production opened last weekend and continues this weekend October 27-29.. Gaslight takes the place of the production previously scheduled for the fall, Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None.
Gaslight, a “domestic thriller” set in 1880’s London, debuted in London in 1938. It came to Broadway in 1941 (as Angel Street), starring Vincent Price in the role of suave villain Jack Manningham who is, for reasons of his own, trying to drive his wife insane. She, with the help of a bluff police detective named Rough, must face up to Manningham’s efforts and thwart them before they succeed.
The production is described as “a gender-bent, steampunk-inspired production of the melodrama classic that gave ‘gaslighting’ its name.”
There will be a Halloween costume contest following the show on Saturday, October 28. Come in your finest steampunk finery and win some fabulous prizes.
This production is directed by Elliot Jackson, who was the co-director for the WCPA’s summer production of Measure for Measure, and who also plays the role of Inspector Rough. McKenzie Huffman and Rebekah McCabe, both of whom were also featured in Measure for Measure, star as Jack and Bella Manningham. The production also features veteran actor Bev Allen and up-and-comer Mattie Ballard as the Manninghams’ servants, Elizabeth and Nancy.
Showtime is 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29, and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Ocotber 29.
Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $15 for students and active military, and $5 for kids 12 and under. Tickets are available in advance at Candy’s Coffee in Westcliffe, online at https://jonestheater.com, or can be reserved by calling the Jones Theater box office at 719-783-3004.
